He was now standing in the light and surprisingly resembled a human man except his eyes were as black as night. You cannot have my child! Annalise shouted. The figure said with the voice of a man, but she knew that he was not human. She looked up and saw a dark hooded figure. Her thoughts were interrupted when a strong gust of wind blew her front door open. That way, they would never forget each other’s faces. She kissed her precious baby, then stared into her eyes for as long as she could, hoping this would leave an imprint on the both of them. Annalise immediately began to sob when she finally held her. Her mother carefully put the baby in her arms. Give her to me now, mother! Annalise insisted. Maybe it would be best if we just take her and you don’t see what happens next, Sarah said as her sister Claudine handed her the baby. She knew that it would be the first and last time that she would hear such a beautiful sound. She felt as though her heart was being ripped out of her chest when she heard her baby cry. Annalise closed her eyes and tried to focus on the sound of the thunder and rain again as she felt Claudine pull the baby out of her body, then heard her aunt scurrying to help. Her aunt Claudine inspected her and saw that her daughter’s head was now visible. She held on as long as she could but knew her baby was coming no matter what. My sweet child, you do not have a choice, Sarah whispered softly.Īnnalise shut her legs squeezing them tight attempting to keep her baby inside of her where it was safe. I won’t let him have her! Annalise shouted. Annalise grabbed onto her mother’s hand tightly when she felt the lower part of her body push on its own. She knew she was having a girl before she had even known that she was with a child because her mother had dreamt of the baby constantly. They were all there to assist in the birth of her daughter. There were four other women in the room with her-her mother and her triplet aunts Claudia, Claudette, and Claudine. She was in her bedroom on a small uncomfortable bed. If you do not deliver her now, I fear you will both perish, Sarah answered sadly.Īnnalise looked down at her large belly. I will not! He will take her as soon as she is born, Annalise answered as the thunder continued to roar. You must push or she will die, Sarah, her mother, pleaded. Her mother’s voice got louder as Annalise shifted focus from the rain to what was going on around her. Now as a woman twenty-one years of age, she still felt the same way except that the thunder and rain had now given her a sense of strength.Īnnalise! She heard her mother call out to her in the distance. She remembered that as a child, on days like this, she would meditate on the sound and vibrations of the thunder, always feeling a sense of calmness and peace that she could never feel in silence. I will be reunited with you all when my work here is done.Īnnalise listened to the roaring thunder and drops of rain as it hit the rooftop of her small cottage.
